Hope4Malawi is a charity dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Malawi through education and training. By empowering communities, they aim to create sustainable change in one of the world’s most deprived countries. Beyond education, Hope4Malawi ensure that children receive food whilst at school. The feeding of children at school is not usual, and for many families, there is a trade-off between sending kids there and not having them ‘work’ at home, tending to the land. Ensuring the kids get fed keeps them at school for longer, giving them an opportunity to raise living standards.
As part of our commitment to charitable giving, Croxsons funded the construction of a classroom block at Mpemba Primary, where many classes were previously held outdoors – including (incredibly) during the wet season. The new classroom offers a stable learning environment, enhancing educational opportunities for local children, with hopes of them achieving higher education and improving their future prospects.
Having the opportunity to be taught inside, all year round, will help provide a stable education to many local children. We are proud to help them to grow up in a learning environment, possibly eventually going to university, and giving successive generations the very best chance in life.
In May 2023, delays to the project occurred due to flooding in Malawi which affected the local region significantly. The focus of the community was put on local support rather than the building project, as would be expected. Foundations were built and the main structure of the walls was put up.
The walls of the classroom block were completed in July of that year and the roof structure was starting to take shape. With a few more weeks of work, in August 2023 the main part of the building was completed with just the glazing work and painting to be finished before the building was ready for use.
On completion of the building, the team were given a very valuable gift – a bag of maize. Maize is an important staple food crop whilst also being an income generating crop for families.
In December 2023, the classroom block was well used and a Surrey-based youth worker was asked by our CEO, Tim Croxsons, to officially open the classroom block on our behalf.
