"It would be difficult in any business to find a firm which can lay claim to a more modest beginning than Wm Croxson & Son Ltd. Born in 1850, the founder (Mr Wm Croxson) was sent to work at the age of 10 with a Greenwich Wine Merchant. Later on, he went to the City for a Madeira Wine merchant, with whom he remained until 1872.

Starting in Bermondsey on his own, with the proverbial half-crown and a few bottles, Mr Croxson (as he now cheerfully admits) fought a hard up-hill struggle for the first ten years."
